Why is my St. Augustine grass dying in patches?

When weather in central Florida turns hot and dry a lot of homeowners see their St. Augustine grass turn yellow or brown and it looks like it is dying. St. Augustine grass often dies in patches and there could be several causes. It takes some examination to find the true cause.

Yellow, brown, or dying patches of St Augustine grass can be caused by chinch bugs

Before you start altering your watering schedule or applying treatments, look at the edges of the yellow/brown patches of grass for tiny, black and white bugs. If they have white 'X' shapes on their backs and move pretty fast, then you have an infestation of chinch bugs.

Chinch Bugs are a prime culprit in killing lawns in central Florida. These pests suck nutrients from the grass blades, while also injecting toxins that kill the grass. This causes the yellowing that quickly turns into brown, dead patches. Chinch bug infestations occur most often in hot, dry weather. And they're often found on the edge of patio pavers, driveways, and sidewalks.

How do I treat for chinch bugs?

You can treat for chinch bugs by applying an insecticide that contains bifenthrin. It comes in a granular form but, we recommend the liquid form for better coverage and faster results. At Liberty Lawn and Pest we use targeted treatments, including liquid sprays with proven active ingredients such as bifenthrin, imidacloprid, or permethrin, to eliminate chinch bug populations effectively.

How long does it take to get rid of chinch bugs?

You may be able to get rid of chinch bugs in as little as 1 to 3 weeks with the right application of insecticide. But, most DIY treatments fall short because homeowners only apply one treatment and assume they have solved the problem. This is because chinch bug populations have overlapping life cycles and insecticides don't kill the eggs. So, you won't kill them all in one treatment. Total control of chinch bugs throughout your lawn usually happens in 1 to 3 months with multiple treatments of the proper mix of insecticides.
